The cult of a spiritual leader is a natural phenomenon and usually attract many into its ambit. Some cult are the methods and way to deal with the essence of life and run for centuries to come. Then comes a mistic nature of cult that is a boult out of the blue and thunderstorms basic nature of human life. The news again stormed with the chirping of a name called “Kailasa” and its founder, “Nithyananda”.
Both substances have a special reference to its working and existence, the term Kailasa was in news few years ago but the recent United Nation presence have made again to news regarding how a cult can change the basic perspective of human being. The essence of understanding todays act shall start with a journey that follows many stories as its by-product to assess the present situation.
Vijaypriya Nithyananda: Name in the headlines
The video of a saffron-clad woman addressing the united nations in Geneva went beating up roots on the internet. Vijaypriya represented Kailasa at the United Nations with rudraksha on her neck, maang-teeka on her forehead and represented as a traditional Hindu women at the United Nation’s gathering. She is identified as ambassador of United States of Kailasa in the United Nations.
She was accompanied by Kailasa saint Louis Chief Sona Kamat, Kailasa UK chief Nitya Atmadayaki, Kailasa France chief Nitya Venkatesananda and Kailasa Slovenian Ma Priyampara Nityananda. In furtherance they also presented a poster of Nithyananda in the United nation meeting.
In her address she mentioned that her guru Nithyananda is persecuted in India but later issued a clarification regarding the same and requested to develop close links between the virtual country and India. The United Nation Human Rights office said that such submissions made by any representatives would be termed irrelevant and will not be considered in the final outcome draft by the office.
The Initial Spark
The journey of an individual such as Nithyananda would have been a long story filled with variety of chapters but the first spark to its name was done by one of his devotees, ‘Janardhan Sharma’. The individual was a devotee of Nithyananda from 2014-2019 and claimed that he had made his family involved with him into this cult. Then he filed a complaint in a rural area of Ahmedabad regarding his daughters being brought from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad without his permission.
He stated that the entire plan was done without taking his consent or opinion structuring to an offence. The ashram in Ahmedabad stated that without permission no child can meet their parents as now they are compliant to the policies of their cult. 15th day of November, 2019 was the date when the news regarding daughters being in Ahmedabad struct out and a havoc was set on the sand of the city. The police checked the premise of the ashram but there were no founding of the daughters at the place.
On 18th day of November, 2019, the daughter of Janardhan Sharma named Nanditha Sharma came on a video call and assured that she was traveling and is involve in working of the cult and is not kidnap so there is no rational to be fearful about it.
The question is not just that what happened on that night was true or what wrong was committed but it is an opportunity to dig deep into the notion of spirituality that has create so many cult that is breaking the basic nature of human society. The aim of attaining ‘Moksha’ is showcased so prominently by such cult that the only route to reach destination is from their ideas.
The ideas are spontaneous and collectively enlarges the scope of bring common consciousness to a group of individuals to come together and build a state of its own. The cult starts feeling to be above every law, governance or even societal values as their way is only way and the right one to choose.
Early 2000s that cultivated the idea of Nithyananda
The initial seeds of such root can be found from Tiruvannamalai that can be counted as a spiritual hub of Tamil Nadu that had structures of several ashrams available to it. Initially, Nithyananda determined himself to be a disciple of Ramakrishna mutt. The nature of promoting a cult have a very similar matrix, the story in this instance was not something unique.
The disciple claimed that he had a very super-natural experience from the nature and was one to have been indulge into unanimated substance. The nature of such existence was with the way he felt to be alive in a whole cosmos and being able to feel the existence of him in every substance of his body. Such ideas generally attract the hoi polloi as it is an uncommon occurrence and have a good attractive notion towards it.
When the idea of such individual is well developed in the minds of general people, they generally start building their cult and structure them out properly. Nityananda also did the same in Bidadi on 5th day of January,2003 by inaugurating his ashram. Then the pavement was ready to construct the dreams of many devotees and make a unique cult in itself.
The ashram then starts to be run as a state and have its own rules and manners that cultivate the negative element of a community. He was usually involved in increasing reach of its community and always wanted his disciple to come up with ideas that can help his idea be grown. Such things are very unnatural for a spiritual leader to say as the aim of spirituality is with context to leading the one who seeks guidance, but the cult examine it as a subscription plan to an idea.
2009: The first stroke
India has a culture that determines the spiritual leader on an essential bases of celibacy and if a leader is not compliant to such order than its is a house of cards for his cult. There was a whistle blower that bought evidence of Nityananda allegedly having sexual notions with women in the video clip. The concerns of the devotees gets generated that how can a Godly person have such humanly acts. The issue was major regarding using its disciple for the same that creates a controversial role of the spiritual leader. Such acts have a big instrumentation on harming the religious sentiments of citizens that ultimately gets determined into a wild fire.
The police forces had to get into force to claim adjudication of justice happening on time. He was arrested by the police and the Karnataka CID from a village in Himachal Pradesh to be presented before court.The charges continued towards him and he took a well-tested method to safe himself by stating that he is not the accused rather a victim of others viewpoint.
2012: The rise of Adheenam
Adheenam can be said to be a seat of Shaivite learning and tradition, the individual is a guiding force for the people in Shaivism and makes a huge impact in the state of Tamil Nadu. Arunagirinatha, Sri Gnana Sambadha Deshika Paramacharya Swamy that lead Madhurai adheenam chose Nithyananda to be given the title of next Adheenam.
He enjoyed the title of being called as the Supreme Pontiff or the 293rd Pontiff, his goal was to take the Organisation international and here he had all the wealth that would countify his efforts. The throne that was thousand of years old and people had deep believed in it. When the selection was made public the anger came to the mutt and forces of such wild fire was destructive. Many Hindu spiritual leaders and other Mutt were against the step taken by the current Adheenam.
When position comes arrogance goes up, people started identifying it, probably he wanted that people to believe his mystical reality or else he was himself fooled by such super-natural reality. The police complaints and court cases were also uplifting and the water currents were going completely against him. The pressures from all over did its work and Nithyananda was sacked as successor of Maurai Adheenam Mutt.
The criminal charges and allegation were important to make a huge pressure against the mutt. He tried to play the ball defensive stating there were only formality that two Adheenam can not be placed together but the googly ball was completely misjudged by him calling for a straight dismissal.
The rebirth of Kailasa
When the term of kailash comes into mind a sacred mountain located in the western Himalayas appears in front of us, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It is considered one of the most sacred mountains in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon religion. In Hinduism, Kailash is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, and it is revered as a sacred pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati reside on the peak of Kailash.
In Buddhism, Kailash is considered to be the residence of Demchok, who represents supreme bliss. Buddhists believe that circumambulating the mountain is a way to purify one’s karma and attain enlightenment. In Jainism, Kailash is believed to be the site where the first Jain Tirthankara, Rishabhdeva, attained moksha (liberation).
The Kailasa that was imagined by Nithyananda was a new mountain peak of mystical identities. He started claiming that he was “Shiva” and as shiva resides in Kailasa he would go to any part of the world and form a new Kailasa for himself. He introduced himself to be Paramashiva anad asked everyone to show integrity towards him and he would guide them to Moksha and eternal peace would be enjoyed by his disciple.
He started building everything around Kailasa as its prime narrative. He declared himself to be the supreme pontiff of Hinduism and would be called as his divine holiness Bhagwan Nithyananda Paramashivam. He started to profound a narrative of a nation state and mentioning that it is his mission to provide all services to the two billion Hindus all over the world.
Where is Kailasa
Kailasa, the self-styled Hindu nation established by controversial figure Nithyananda, is not recognized by the United Nations or any other international organization.
The United Nations is a global organization that recognizes sovereign states based on internationally accepted criteria such as territory, population, and government. While Kailasa claims to be a sovereign nation, it has not been recognized by any country or international organization, and its legitimacy remains highly questionable.
So where is Kailasa, the best answer can be given by Nithyananda himself as he says, “me, talking to me, through me.” So even the kailasa might be the same a country in his thoughts that do not exists physically but resides people through his mystic thoughts. The current news of his disciples being presented in United Nation is like a well PR stunt to continuously making his presence available to the world. The cult can be such tricky if not meant to be curbed by appropriate force.

The nation of India is known for its steps in spiritual diversity and acknowledged as spiritual leader to the world. The cult culture that has black inked the traditional Indian style is a big question not only for the political leadership or the administrative workforce but as a country there would be a deep though given too. The need of hour is to be well motioned and knowledgeable to be protected from such kind of mystical cult group that do not just physically abuses but also takes the cognitive skills of mind to think appropriately.
When a consciousness that determines what’s right and wrong goes, countries like Kailasa stands strong. Everyone should have right to practice their ideas but not on the cost of people’s sentiments and destroying basic purpose of life. It should be a duty on every Indian to help the authorities to identify such image tendering individuals that tarnish idea of India
