Deadly for endangered Gangetic Dolphins?
Environmentalists and conservationists say that the rise in cruises damaged a lot to the habitat of the Ganges river dolphins also known by their scientific name i.e., Platanista Gangetica. Ganges river dolphin faces several threats, including water pollution, excessive water extraction and poaching.
MV Ganga Vilas cruise passes through Kaithi village which is 30 kilometers from Varanasi at the confluence of the Ganges and Gomti rivers, where the deep water and slower currents around the intersection provide a safe habitat for the endangered dolphin. It also passes from Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, Bihar, so its route can also affect the dolphins.
Ravindra Kumar Sinha, an environmentalist who works mainly for protecting the Gangetic Dolphin species said that “The cruises are a dangerous proposition in addition to all the existing risks for the dolphins.” The number of dolphins has risen in the last few years with about 3200 in the Ganges and 500 in the Brahmaputra due to improved water conditions and conservation initiatives. But he thought that the increment in water transport in that area will affect dolphins a lot and again make their number an extinct species.
Kashif Siddiqui, Marketing Director of Antara cruises stated that, MV Ganga Vilas cruise follows all the environmental precautions and government guidelines with sustainable principles at its heart, it is made as pollution prevention and noise control technologies. But, there are also many projects in progress on NW-1 Ganges and NW-2 Brahmaputra routes, which can affect a lot to the riverine ecosystem.
What the CEO of the Cruise and Others wants to share as his experience of the ship?
Raj Singh, CEO of Gangas Vilas cruise stated that, he has personally experienced the whole cruise, which is designed for his travelers. The historical route has been finalized with the support, assistance and cooperation of the governments of India and Bangladesh which are working together to ensure seamless travel between the two countries.
The iconic and widely regarded Ganga Aarti on the banks of river Ganga is one of the tour’s highlights. History buffs will get the opportunity to study the effects of French and Dutch influences on West Bengal’s architecture during the term. Passengers on board will learn about making handcrafted textiles and brassware in the West Bengal hamlet of Matiari. The boat will also make stops for celebrations featuring folk music and dances in a few different places. One of the numerous stops of the journey is Bagerhat, where the visitors may see the 60-dome mosque constructed by Khan Jahan Ali during the Bengal sultanate era.
PTI Knegar Krieger, a swiss national who is on board from the maiden journey said, “Traveling on the Ganges is a very special experience, it is once in a lifetime experience, not to be missed.”
Thommien Christian, another Swiss tourist, said “Everything is fantastic on this cruise.”
